Just another one of my random thoughts. Today, I am not talking about nuclear technology, biochemical weapons or massive killing as suggested by Relax. Instead, I am going to share my views on the Malaysians’ attitude who love to take things for granted.
You say a nuclear explosion in a dense population area can wipe out the entire community. But, what about the double figures of deaths from road accidents everyday? These numerical figures, though small, should not go unnoticed by the public.
Technology with the road users’ mentality of taking-things-for-granted is a deadly combination. Compared to the 80’s or even 90’s, the average speed of vehicles on the domestic roads have increased tremendously. People tend to drive fast because car manufacturers have made believe that cars of the latest model are stable and safe even at outrageously high cruising speed.
ABS, which was originally used in aerospace applications, stands for “anti-lock braking system” or “advanced braking system”. It is designed to help the driver to maintain control during an emergency-braking manouevre. Fair enough, it is a GREAT addition of safety features for a car, but it’s not the license to drive as though one is on a racing circuit. No matter how advanced or sophisticated the car technology is, emergency braking at an extremely high speed can still be fatal as inersia is doing it’s job here.
Watch the news every night and you will be able to witness yourself the devastating conditions of cars involved in road accidents. (Terengganu State Government please take note here) See how a Merc or Toyota Camry is pathetically crushed and reduced to half its original length. Must the drivers really drive so fast or it’s “Technology” which fooled and deceived them? I leave the answers to them.
Weather and road conditions are the other 2 factors which many road users choose to take for granted. Hey hey! What we got here! It seems that taking things for granted is one of Malaysians’ favourites besides complaining and faking their income taxes. Perhaps the education system or more specifically, the driving testing system, should shoulder the blame. Perhaps they should scrap off the usage of modern technology in vehicles. Well, statistics has clearly shown that there’s a lower death rate on road during the era of classic car technology. Maybe not many people can afford to buy their own cars at that time. Less cars on the road = Less road fatalities. But even so, we can’t ignore the truth that the overall driving style has turned increasingly aggressive.
Obviously, the driving culture in Malaysia needs to be rectified. By far and large, if this matter involves lives, it should involve great care and attention from the public.
FYI : In Germany, there is a MINIMUM speed limit for cars on the highways. So, driving slowly there will earn you a speed ticket. High speed kills and so does slow. Slow drive on highways will most probably cause the drivers behind you to be reckless, especially if he or she is rushing for time. Be my guest if you want to piss them off.
But again, use technology responsibly.
