To Me, Singapore Means…

August 20, 2008

the Ship, Sakae Sushi, the Soup Restaurant (public listed), the Singapore Flyer (impressive display), the dimsum shop at Chinatown and Shokutso.

Thanks to the cunningly delicious food in Singapore, my waistline is expanding.

Shokutso restaurant is one big deal and certainly deserves the highlight here. The Japanese buffet is a perfect paradise for Japanese food lovers. Shark fin soup, steamboat, specially-served lobster, marshmallows coated in chocolate, over-flowing green tea ice-cream, crabs, prawns, Alaskan crabs, salmon, tuna, all types of sushi… you name it.

For every 20 minutes or so, they rang the bell so that people would queue up to get the limited dishes which were not served on the table. It’s on first-come-first-serve basis. Yippee…! I was totally indulged in the world of kiasuism. But, one drawback is the price. $40.00 may be alright for Singaporeans to spend, but if you convert it to Malaysian ringgit with a factor of 2.4, it will cost you around RM100.00 per head which is rather pricey. ^^

Good luck to Singapore for the upcoming F1 race. With the birds-eye view from the Flyer, I could see that the tracks and podium were almost ready for the big day.

p/s : All pics are with my cousins because I was so busy eating that I didn’t have the time to take photos, myself. :P

Basic Arithmetic

August 7, 2008

Thanks you Wan Shing for contributing this maths question. The solution/explanation is in the comment.

One day, a group of friends (3 of them) rented a room in a hotel. The owner told them it would be 10 bucks per head. Therefore, they paid a total of 30 bucks for that room. After that, the owner realised that there’s a miscalculation and it should be 25 bucks for the room. Therefore, he called his staff to return 5 bucks to the 3 good friends.

The staff was dishonest and took 2 bucks from the money. He then paid each of them 1 buck from the balance of 3 bucks. So, now these 3 friends paid 9 bucks each, right? This gives us a total of 27 bucks. 27 bucks plus the 2 bucks taken by the staff, it’s 29 bucks. Where’s the other 1 buck?

Take a deep breath and think while you are sipping off your coffee. Hope you enjoy the cognitive process. :)

Hint : It’s simple but the way the question is asked is indeed confusing.

Technology, the Culprit Behind the Scene of Numerous Deaths in Malaysia?

August 6, 2008

Just another one of my random thoughts. Today, I am not talking about nuclear technology, biochemical weapons or massive killing as suggested by Relax. Instead, I am going to share my views on the Malaysians’ attitude who love to take things for granted.

You say a nuclear explosion in a dense population area can wipe out the entire community. But, what about the double figures of deaths from road accidents everyday? These numerical figures, though small, should not go unnoticed by the public.

Technology with the road users’ mentality of taking-things-for-granted is a deadly combination. Compared to the 80’s or even 90’s, the average speed of vehicles on the domestic roads have increased tremendously. People tend to drive fast because car manufacturers have made believe that cars of the latest model are stable and safe even at outrageously high cruising speed.

ABS, which was originally used in aerospace applications, stands for “anti-lock braking system” or “advanced braking system”. It is designed to help the driver to maintain control during an emergency-braking manouevre. Fair enough, it is a GREAT addition of safety features for a car, but it’s not the license to drive as though one is on a racing circuit. No matter how advanced or sophisticated the car technology is, emergency braking at an extremely high speed can still be fatal as inersia is doing it’s job here.

Watch the news every night and you will be able to witness yourself the devastating conditions of cars involved in road accidents. (Terengganu State Government please take note here) See how a Merc or Toyota Camry is pathetically crushed and reduced to half its original length. Must the drivers really drive so fast or it’s “Technology” which fooled and deceived them? I leave the answers to them.

Weather and road conditions are the other 2 factors which many road users choose to take for granted. Hey hey! What we got here! It seems that taking things for granted is one of Malaysians’ favourites besides complaining and faking their income taxes. Perhaps the education system or more specifically, the driving testing system, should shoulder the blame. Perhaps they should scrap off the usage of modern technology in vehicles. Well, statistics has clearly shown that there’s a lower death rate on road during the era of classic car technology. Maybe not many people can afford to buy their own cars at that time. Less cars on the road = Less road fatalities. But even so, we can’t ignore the truth that the overall driving style has turned increasingly aggressive.

Obviously, the driving culture in Malaysia needs to be rectified. By far and large, if this matter involves lives, it should involve great care and attention from the public.

FYI : In Germany, there is a MINIMUM speed limit for cars on the highways. So, driving slowly there will earn you a speed ticket. High speed kills and so does slow. Slow drive on highways will most probably cause the drivers behind you to be reckless, especially if he or she is rushing for time. Be my guest if you want to piss them off.

But again, use technology responsibly.
